The new third-person MOBA by Epic Games, Paragon, is becoming increasingly popular on the MOBA scene. It’s currently in closed beta where players can pay for early access, as well as some cool additional features. You can sign up for a beta key on the website, but it’s not a guaranteed entry at all, especially seeing as how they’ve just reached about one million entry signups. If you’re familiar with the game Smite, Paragon is very similar to that, but better in every way imaginable. Instead of buying items from a large store in-game, like you would for League of Legends, Paragon allows you to craft your own deck of items. This lets you personally customize what’s available to you in the store screen to create a play style that you desire. Card packs need to be bought with Reputation, which is in-game currency gained after every game and upon certain account level ups. They cannot be purchased with real money, which helps balance out the game significantly. If you want better items, you have to actually play more.
Paragon is releasing one hero every two weeks. Yesterday a new jungler named Khaimera was released, which brings their total hero count to eighteen. Not a lot, but the game is also still closed off to the public unless you purchase early access. The game also features “Hero Races.” These races are focused around new hero releases and reward the entire community for playing together. The first person to reach mastery level 10 with a hero will receive bonus Reputation and will have their name down in the Hall of Fame, saying that they were the first ever to reach full mastery with that hero. It begins on the day of release and the players have one week to complete it. For every 100 million collective experience earned on a hero, the entire community will get 10k Reputation, capping out at 300 million experience and 30k Reputation.
The game also introduced a draft mode in the latest patch. Before, you would pick your hero before you began searching. When new heroes were announced, queue times were gigantic because everybody wanted to play the same person. This draft mode will now place everybody into a lobby, and people will pick their hero based off of their position in the draft. This will help lower queue times and create more balance. The game is really great and you should definitely look into it if you haven’t already. It has a very unique feel to it and stands out from every other MOBA that I’ve seen or played. Be sure to check Paragon’s website for the latest updates and look forward for the game dropping free to the public in open beta this August!
