I’m not entirely sure why this keeps happening, but it seems as though video game companies just can’t seem to get the fact that deception and lies don’t work the way that they use to. Comcept’s Mighty No. 9 is the latest victim in this pit of deceit and yup, you guessed it, people aren’t happy.
In order to keep your customers happy you need to be up front and forthright about what you are doing behind closed doors…well mostly. Unfortunately for Comcept, going online, asking for money to fund their project, and then changing everything without letting their backers know, didn’t really turn out in their favor. I just think it’s really funny how some “Independent” developers think that they can play with the big dogs (EA, Konami, Ubisoft, you know, some of the other companies that deceived us) and think that there wouldn’t be any recourse. Oh and by the way, I put independent in quotes because I don’t know if you knew this or not but…*whispers* technically you’re not independent if you have a publisher.
That certainly went over well with fans too, the day that Comcept announced that their game would be published by Deep Silver (a company who’s product I like). Now I’m not against developers having publishers by any stretch of the imagination. In some cases having a publisher can be a good thing, not counting particularly recent events of course. However in this case it does seem to be a very similar situation where publisher intervention may have had a hand in ruining yet another game. But that’s besides the point, no in this case it was the fact that Comcept announced the partnership with Deep Silver after already receiving 4 MILLION DOLLARS! Have you guys seen this pile of garbage? They pulled an Ubisoft and the game is literally NOTHING like they showed in Alpha state back in 2014.
Now I know I have no reason to be angry about this just simply because I for one did not back this project. Obviously if you’ve made it this far into the article you’d see I wouldn’t have needed to. But it was a game I was looking forward to and I had high hopes that it would give crowd funding some sort of relevance. Many times I’ve been asked by my viewers from my stream “Hey did you grab Day Z?”, “Hey do you think you’re ever going to get Ark: Survival?”, “Have you thought about picking up Rust?”, no because I don’t pay for broken games and this is exactly why. There is no guarantee that you will be getting the product that you paid for and time and time again I have been proven right about this. I use to get paid to play broken games, I refuse to PAY to play a broken game.
I will say this up front however, there are some games that I have purchased into, one in particular was a mistake but a happy one and the other I paid less than $2 for. Both games I did my research on, however, and both games I felt were worth their price. I had a product that was fully playable, had high recommendations from multiple sources and were games I saw myself playing. With Kickstarter, you don’t get any of that. You don’t get a playable demo, you don’t get a money back guarantee, and as of late, roughly 80% of the time you don’t get the product you paid for. Give me a demo FOR FREE and maybe I’ll think about funding your project. If you guys want to stop getting screwed over all the time, STOP PAYING THEM! I personally don’t feel sorry for the people that pay into these things. You have absolutely no right to be angry because you willingly gave your money away to a product that doesn’t exist. And I’m not saying there haven’t been some successful, legitimate, crowd funded games but guess what, they didn’t promise the freaking world. They made their game, people were pleasantly surprised and we moved on. But those were ACTUAL indie developers, this one got picked up by a publisher and all of a sudden the game changed appearance? Come on, that’s not coincidence, that’s predictable.
Oh and by the by this also goes for the pre-ordering crowd as well. I use to pre-order games all the time because back in the days of late PS2 and Xbox (even early PS3 and 360) you knew what you were getting for a product. There was tons of marketing, commercials, and reviews in magazines (for the younger crowd, those were really thin paper books filled with news). Now there are teaser trailers, whispers, and review embargos. Really? How the hell do you expect to sell your game when all you’re giving us are your hopes and dreams? I stopped pre-ordering because of all the exclusivity and day one DLC bulls%$t. Who wants to play extra content when you haven’t even finished the main game yet? Not me. It’s all just a ploy to grab more money while they still think their customers are stupid. Look at what Activision did with the remaster of Modern Warfare. I wrote a whole other article on that if you want to check it out by clicking the image to the right but I’m sure most of you already know what they did.
All in all guys, stop being stupid, that’s it. Stop playing into this whole idea of “Well they need my money” and “My contribution will make a difference” because it doesn’t matter. Comcept still went out, got themselves a publisher and they still took your money with glee, spending it on a sad attempt at a commercial that just ended up being insulting (you anime fans know what I’m talking about). The more you use your heads and the less you give in to whatever kind of pressure you’re feeling, the better products will get. Speak with your wallets, as they say, and make it known that you don’t pay for less than perfect….and would you guys stop giving money to Star Citizen. It’s not gonna make it come out any faster.
