When it comes to the fighting game genre, Sony and Microsoft are constantly exchanging blows (while Nintendo spectates from the sidelines). While both the PlayStation 4 and XBox One consoles have access to the same software, each has a short list exclusive fighting game titles to potentially tilt the scales.
Looking at the 2016 lineup, PlayStation appears to have access to a greater number of new fighting game exclusives. While Street Fighter V has shifted to being a PlayStation exclusive already, gamers can also expect to see The King of Fighters XIV and BlazBlue: Central Fiction to be absent from Microsoft’s shelves.
On the other hand, XBox One is keeping Killer Instinct relevant by continuing to release new seasons of content. Rare’s fighting game has proven to be a fan favorite with its revival, incorporating many familiar characters from Microsoft’s library. This follows a similar theme as Nintendo’s Super Smash Brothers franchise – something Sony failed at with PlayStation All-Stars – though with a much different approach.
Amidst all of these are an abundance of shared titles to look forward to. PlayStation fans have gotten used to sharing the Tekken franchise as Tekken 7: Fated Retribution will be available for PS4 and XBox One in early 2017. Other titles to look forward to include Injustice 2 and Dragonball: Xenoverse 2.
The decision as to who really has the better library for fighting games ultimately comes down to the player, especially when taking other factors into consideration. Frame rates, inputs, controllers, and even social elements shape one’s preference when it comes to consoles.
