TV shows are part of our daily lives it seems. We’re constantly bombarded with ads about the new TV shows and hearing friends tell you “You have to watch this show!” over and over again. While some shows are worth the time, many of them aren’t as well. New ideas for shows are presented to hundreds of executives every day, and many are turned down. It got me thinking, what games would be great as TV shows?
5: The Witcher
Geralt is an interesting character by himself, but add the world and how big it was and it became something masterful. I’ll admit, I only played it for 5 hours and I thought it was decent, not anything to rave about, but a TV show about this game would be something wonderful. Bringing Geralt to life on the TV screen would be something unheard of, a project on the scale of Game of Thrones. Geralt has a deep storyline that can go many different ways, but it has to be on a network that isn’t afraid to show violence.
Lead Actor: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Plays Jamie Lannister on the hit TV series Game of Thrones. Nikolaj has the attitude of a murderer and of someone who knows what he wants and how to get it, just like Geralt.)
Director: Miguel Sapochnik (Directed Battle of the bastards Game of Thrones episode)
Network: HBO (They aren’t shy to put out progressive content while sticking to an in-depth story.)
4: Far Cry
The Far Cry series hit it’s peak with the third installment on the Xbox 360 and PS3. The open world experience that game brought to the consoles was nearly perfect in every way. Learning new abilities while exploring the new world made for a game that I couldn’t put down. Experimenting with stealth gameplay and learning how to hunt animals for loot and supplies lead to a game full of surprises. The most fun I had with that game was raiding enemy outposts and taking them over ruthlessly, or taking every man out at one time with precision. The vast open world gameplay can take a normally dull story line, and turn it until something interesting and addicting.
Lead Actor: Enrique Murcanio (Plays Marco in the hit Netflix original Bloodline. He has the looks, the swag, and the demeanor to a play a “rough and tough” role, while being calm during action scenes.)
Director: Jeffrey Lieber (Directed some of the best LOST episodes and many that were action packed)
Network: AMC (Breaking Bad was an intense, dramatic, and dark show that I think should take on the same type of feel with the Far Cry TV show)
3: Gears of War
“Aww C’Mon!” Words every gamer hears at least once while playing through Gears of War. Marcus Phoenix became a house hold name for fans of the franchise. His ability to do whatever he wants, when he wants and how he wants it. From the beginning, fans had questions about his past, but all of those were answered with the last installment of the franchise Gears of War: Judgement. All of the characters in the game have stories that go back many years and would be great to see come alive over a 10-15 episode season.
Lead Role: Karl Urban (While Doom wasn’t a good movie by any standards, but Karl Urban stood out in his role. Almost human was a TV show that was canceled by FOX which would lead you to believe he would be perfect for a soldier who liked working on his own and breaking the rules.)
Director: Ed Bianchi (Director of Bloodlines on Netflix as well as Bates Motel. He is able to pull emotions out of his actors and keeps the camera moving slightly to make you feel like you’re part of the action)
Network: HBO (Band of Brothers was a near perfect adaptation of what war feels like, also told the back story of the characters)
2: Halo
Masterchief brings the best out of gamers. The Xbox brand was built upon the game, and I don’t think Xbox live would be what it is today without Halo 2. The game revolutionized the console space, as well as the FPS genre for it’s time. Halo was the one of the first games that was labeled a shooter but had a griping, and deep storyline that kept you invested in the game for many hours. The movie has seemed to fade away, but what about a TV show? More time to develop a story isn’t always bad, but it would need a huge budget, and a director with complete freedom.
Lead Role: Daniel Cudmore (played Masterchief in Forward Unto Dawn and played Colossus in the X-Men franchise.)
Director: Stewart Hendler (directed the best episodes of Forward Unto Dawn)
Network: Amazon Prime (Amazon is known for giving creative control over to their directors and producers.)
1: Dark Souls
It’s no secret that Dark Souls is one of the best gaming franchises, but would it work as a TV show? I think it would. Dark Souls is great at progressing story through visuals and very little dialogue. The effects would be difficult to create and make perfect, but not impossible to pull off in a way that could benefit the network that takes on this show. The budget would be immense and the actor would need to have extensive experience with especial effects and a green screen workspace. The monsters and the enemies would be incredible to see come to life, I would love to see this adaption from the hit game series.
Lead Role: Kit Harrington (Plays Jon Snow in Game of Thrones. He uses a sword nearly every episode and looks good doing it. He has extensive time working with special effects with the White Walkers in his current role. He has a very calming demeanor, but can be scary, and aggressive at the same time. He also has experience wearing armor and using weapons already.)
Director: Doug Petrie/Marco Ramirez (The same team that brought you DareDevil. The crazy 360 degree fights would be epic while fighting a boss, and taking on multiple enemies)
Network: Netflix (The streaming company is always taking on new ideas and never turns down something that will be a big hit.)
While some of these shows might never happen, one can only dream. Taking the best creative minds, with some of the best gaming franchises and bring them to life is something I can dream about at lest right? I hope on day I will see at least one of these come to life.
