For those of you who have enjoyed the original side-scrolling survival game This War of Mine, you’ll be pleased to know that a board game adaptation is currently enjoying phenomenal success on Kickstarter.
The board game features cooperative play for up to four players. Each round represents a day, in which you will need to explore your surroundings, gather resources and prepare by building beds to sleep in or defences against night raiders. During the night, you’ll be able to defend the house, sleep or venture into dangerous areas such as an army supply depot or sniper surveyed sites. Characters will build fatigue, get injured, killed or get fed up and leave the group.
The event deck in This War of Mine contains colour coded cards that link to entries in a Choose Your Own Adventure type story book. The book comes with story snippets that include choices for the players to make. As far as I have seen from the game-play, these are not the type you usually make in a game. They are more realistic and feature some emotional storytelling. The colour coding is also used to avoid unwanted types of encounters when playing with children or emotive people.
The designers came up with an original concept. The rule book acts as a tutorial/introduction guide and also as an integral game component by distributing group decisions among players when not playing solo. Yes you can also play it solo and apparently it works quite well.
The game looks promising as the first impressions are quite positive. I personally see it as a breath of fresh air in the board game scene, since most survival games are about zombies and whatnot.
The Kickstarter campaign has gathered some $340.000 worth of pledges, more than 8 times the initial funding requirements. There are 5 days left since writing this, so you still have plenty of time to check it out and see if it’s worth the investment.
Here’s a teaser, although we’re past that.
