The Ape Escape series is one of PlayStation’s oldest franchises, with the original game launching in the late 90’s and spawning multiple sequels that were mostly a lot of fun. A handful of developers have been voicing their support for the Year of the Monkey in 2016, and Sony has also joined in on the fun by taking to twitter by posting a message and an accompanying image. The tweet is from PlayStation Japan so it’s obviously in Japanese, but it translates to, “2016 Year of the Monkey. Today, SCE will begin working!”

While it could just be Sony giving a nod to one of their greatest series, the fact that they would attach an Ape Escape image like that is sure to get people speculating. The last time the Ape Escape series made an appearance was in the party game called PlayStation Move Ape Escape that released for the PlayStation 3 in 2010. If you look to the main series of games then you’re going even further back in time, as the last main Ape Escape game released for the PlayStation 2 in 2005. The series has also made some guest appearances in various other franchises like Ratchet & Clank and LittleBigPlanet.
Sony is also re-releasing both Ape Escape 2 and 3 at some point later this year via the PS2 emulation program for PlayStation 4. Both of the games will be receiving updated visuals and full trophy support, though the exact details on the release dates have not been revealed. There aren’t too many PlayStation 2 games that are playable on PlayStation 4 yet as of this time, but below you can find the full list of titles that are available to play right now.
