While it’s unfortunate that Sega came up with yet another swing and a miss with Sonic Forces at the end of last year, it’s important to not forget about the massive success that Sonic Mania was. The game that was spearheaded by hardcore Sonic fans ended up being the best entry that the series has seen in well over a decade, and now that game is coming back in 2018 with even more content.
Now it has been revealed that a new version of the game is coming in the form of Sonic Mania Plus. This version of the game will actually be getting a physical release, while also packing plenty of new content for fans to look forward to. This includes the likes of new playable characters like Ray the Squirrel and Mighty the Armadillo, as well as a new Encore Mode and a four-player competition mode. This also comes with a holographic 32-page art book, as well as a Mega Drive cover slip that is reversible.
For those who missed out on the game originally, this is an excellent opportunity to hop on the bandwagon. It’s easy to write off just about every Sonic game that comes out these days, but Sonic Mania is a true outlier. Fans of the original side-scrolling classics will find lots to love with the game, considering that it contains remixed versions of those levels along with brand new ones. Hopefully Sega realizes they have a winner with Mania, and continues in that direction rather than churning more of the same crap they have been for many years now.
Sonic Mania Plus does not currently have a concrete release date, but Sega is aiming for the game to launch at some point this summer. It will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
