The Switch has been a great success for Nintendo so far this year, with the new console launching in March and selling like hotcakes since then. The console is actually on track to near the lifetime sales of the Wii U in its first year alone, which is pretty impressive.
This early success was definitely hoped for by the company, but it looks like even they underestimated how well the console would actually do. The company has announced that they are stepping up the console’s productions to 2 million units per month to meet the continued high demand, with the goal being to ship 20 million units by the end of the year. The console is also set to be launching in brand new territories later this year and early next year, so they also need to make sure that there’s enough supply for those markets.
Stock shortages for Nintendo products definitely aren’t a new thing, but with the Switch it is a problem that they need to sort out soon. The Christmas season is coming fast, and with the console being the hottest gaming device of the year (and with some big game releases still yet to come) they’re going to have a lot of orders to fill. Super Mario Odyssey alone should convince just about anyone who is even mildly interested in purchasing a Switch to grab one when it launches later this month, and the highly-anticipated Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will be coming in early December.
Nintendo Switch launched on March 3 for $299, and was a huge hit right out of the gate. This was largely due to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild being a launch title for the console, which drove up sales of the console significantly. That game has gone on to become one of the highest-reviewed games of all time, and played a huge part in the Switch’s early success.
