The Phantom Dust series has had a shaky existence, with the game originally doing pretty poorly on the original Xbox. A reboot was then said to be in the works many years later, but then that ended up falling apart and never happening. What we finally ended up getting was an HD re-release of the original game, and the good news is that it’s doing much better now than it did before.
The game’s creative director, Adam Isgreen, recently announced on the Phantom Dust fan site that the game has surpassed 1 million players. This is a truly impressive number, especially when you consider that just 50,000 purchased the original game. A lot of the popularity is likely due to the fact that the game was released for free, but the plan is to get people hooked and then pave the way for a full-blown sequel with modern hardware.
Isgreen then detailed a new update that is set to be coming to the game soon, which includes a new daily skill reward system. This system essentially allows you to unlock skills that could previously only be unlocked through the game’s expansion. Players simply need to log-in and they will receive a free specific skill for that day. To go along with this, players can then unlock a bonus skill each week by logging-in and play at least four times in one week. You can also unlock all of the skills immediately by purchasing the expansion skill pack for $4.99.
There’s a lot more to read into with this new update, so be sure to check out the complete patch notes by clicking right here. Phantom Dust is available to play for free on Xbox One and Windows 10.
