Longtime fans of Resident Evil are no doubt familiar with Code Veronica. Originally released in 2000 on the Sega Dreamcast, and the first to not come out on PlayStation, it takes place 3 months after the events of Resident Evil 2 while following Claire and Chris Redfield. The first Resident Evil game to feature real-time 3D graphics and set pieces, as well as the first to take the player outside of Racoon City, Code Veronica was a major departure from the main series in many ways and a successful one to boot garnering impressive review scores almost across the board every time it’s seen a new release. In particular this port is of Code Veronica X, a version released a year later on PlayStation 2 with updated graphics, added cutscenes, and more.
Capcom announced on Twitter earlier this week that the newest port in the series would be coming to PlayStation 4, and as soon as next week. It’s rare to see a secret so well kept in the gaming world these days, but to announce the port so close to release means they have been playing this impressively close to the chest. Coming to the PS2 Classics section of the PlayStation Store, it’s safe to say that Resident Evil fans will undoubtedly be happy to have their hands on another revamped classic in the series.
This isn’t the first time they’ve ported the game to the newest console generation available, with the HD remake hitting PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011. However, Resident Evil without remakes and remasters just doesn’t seem right, and 6 years is quite a long time to wait for them to take advantage of modern consoles’ power and capabilities. We can only hope this means we’ll be seeing other entries hit the current market soon. Still waiting on Resident Evil 2 and 3’s remaster, Capcom, just saying. Until then, Code Veronica X is out May 9th on the PlayStation Store.
