Fallout 4 has been out for a while now, but there’s still some big things in the works that involve the game. A virtual reality version of the game has been in development for some time, bringing players directly inside of Bethesda’s massive RPG. While this is definitely something that has been anticipated for a while, some think that it’s going to be something much bigger than just another VR game.
AMD corporate VP Roy Taylor recently spoke at the VR World Congress, where he talked about the virtual reality version of Fallout 4. According to him, it will be “the Mario, the Sonic the Hedgehog” of the VR industry. “It will change the way we think about VR. It will be an industry changer,” he adds.
Of course, the VR gaming industry officially kicked off last year with the releases of the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR, though it wasn’t as successful as it could have been. Taylor goes on to discuss some of the issues that are currently holding back this new industry, with wires being one of the biggest issues that the industry faces. “They’re an inhibitor to what should be giving great freedom of movement,” said Taylor. “One of the most important things we do next is get rid of those pesky wires. I’m very pleased to tell you that AMD has come up with a solution.”
As for what this solution is, AMD has partnered with Nitero to create wireless VR. They’re using multi-gigabit transmission and integrated bean forming to transmit stereoscopic video at “unheard of latencies.” Unfortunately, the technology that they are working on currently is being intended for the next generation of virtual reality devices, meaning that it is likely quite a ways off. However, when it does arrive they believe that it will completely revolutionize the consumer experience, leading them to “never tolerate wires again.”
It has been slow going for the VR gaming industry so far, with very few games to speak of in terms of ones that truly utilize virtual reality effectively. This year’s Resident Evil 7: Biohazard has been a recent standout on PlayStation VR, and has been cited by many as being the best VR gaming experience currently available.
