A lot of things were shown off during Nintendo’s recent Nintendo Direct event, but the game that headlined it all was Splatoon 2. The Switch-exclusive game is set to be one of the hottest titles for Nintendo’s new console this year, which previously only had a vague Summer release window. Well, thanks to the event we now know that it will be launching on July 21st.
That wasn’t the only information that we got during the presentation, as the company also showed off some brand new amiibo for fans to get excited about. The characters that the amiibo portray are similar to the ones from the first game, with Inkling Boy, Inkling Girl and a Squid being the characters here. However, their appearances have been given an update with the new game, making them a solid new addition to the collection for amiibo fans. Even better, the previously-released amiibo will also be compatible with the game, allowing you to scan them in to unlock new content.
When we first saw footage of Splatoon on Nintendo Switch during the console’s video reveal, we weren’t sure if it was a remaster of the first game or a new one entirely due to it looking so similar. This has lead some to question Nintendo on the fact that this may be more of a Splatoon 1.5 than a true sequel, but the company showed off a big new mode to set the record straight. The game will be launching with a new horde mode called Salmon Run, which has a team of four players fighting numerous waves of enemies to try and stay alive. It will be interesting to see how this mode is received, seeing as the original game’s main appeal was its shift away from just mindlessly killing others.
Splatoon 2 will launch exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on July 21st. Be sure to check out the new footage of the game that was shown during the Nintendo Direct below.
