HBO’s The Last of Us had the second-largest launch on the network after 2010’s Boardwalk Empire with 4.7 million viewers for the first episode. Only the premiere of House of the Dragon, which attracted 9.986 million views, performed higher within the same period. According to HBO, the audience on Sunday nights often accounts for 20 to 40% of “the show’s total gross audience per episode.”
Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the producers, commented on the accomplishment “Our main goal was to create the finest rendition of this well-known tale that we could for the broadest audience possible. The number of fans, both new and old, who have embraced The Last of Us into their homes and their hearts makes us incredibly happy.” The chairman and CEO of HBO, Casey Bloys, then added his own gratitude and expressed his hope that “fans around the world will enjoy the rest of the season.”
It’s a terrific start for the TV show, which has eight more episodes to air before the start of a second season. Given how well-received the first episode has been, we’d be shocked if The Last of Us: Part II isn’t transformed into a TV series in the future, provided the next episodes continue to be of good quality and draw in people.
