The revival of the Planet of the Apes series has been extremely successful, with both Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes performing very will critically and financially. While fans of the series want these good times to keep rolling ever onward, the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes will actually conclude the story of its main character.
This was detailed by the movie’s producer, Peter Chernin, who revealed recently that it was always planned to be a three-part story for Caesar. “We made a very conscious decision, frankly, when we started thinking about this seven or eight years ago, to look at these three movies as a trilogy in a lot of ways…It was inevitable from the moment apes gained intelligence that apes and humans were going to be on a collision course for what would be the dominant species on Earth. And this movie is the war to resolve that dominance. We’ve always looked at this as a three-part story. And the appropriate ending of that story is to see which species dominates.”
Of course, seeing which species will dominate is the big question viewers will have going into the next movie, as both sides of the fight gear up for war. All of the promotional footage from the movie suggests that it will be non-stop action, which is fitting considering how the first two movies have been slowly building up to this. Caesar will apparently go through some pretty big changes in the movie, with the director saying that “the Caesar you see at the beginning of this movie is not the Caesar you see at the end of this movie or during the journey he goes through.”
War for the Planet of the Apes will debut in theaters on July 14th.
