For over 30 years, The Witcher series has been telling a story. Monsters that go bump in the night, witches that practice true magic, and the titular Witchers that hunt down anything and anyone for a price. Originally started as a series of short stories in Poland written by Andrzej Sapkowski, the series eventually grew to become a well known book series and eventually into the trio of games that we all know and love today. The Witcher, released originally on PC to critical acclaim, introduced gamers everywhere to the fantastic story of Geralt of Rivia and the events that surround him, his family, and the land at large. From there, two more games were released culminating in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt which is considered by many to be one of the best RPGs in gaming history.
Now it’s time for Geralt to make his way to the next medium once again it seems. In an official post by Platige Image, they announce their partnership with Sapkowski and Netflix to bring The Witcher Saga to the streaming site as a drama series. Those unfamiliar with Platige would recognize them best from their work in developing the cinematics for every Witcher game to date, and even developing the cinematics for Cyberpunk 2077 as well. This speaks volumes of what to expect from the series itself as it shows that those making it are already well versed in the lore and characters. It also tells us that the series will most likely be CG based rather than live-action, though at this time that is purely speculation on our part.
Sapkowski is to serve as a creative consultant on the series with Sean Daniel (The Mummy series), Jason Brown (The Expanse), Tomek Baginski (The Cathedral), and Jarek Sawko from Platige to produce. Further details are scarce at this time; such as exactly when the series takes place in the timeline, if it will follow the books or the games (there are divergent paths that gamers can take and certain changes made due to the nature of the medium), and even when to expect the first episodes to hit Netflix. Until then we can always relive the story ourselves – The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is available on PC and through backwards compatibility on Xbox One, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
