The first presentation of Pokemon GO, at this year’s Game Developer’s Conference, has been cancelled, according to the GDC website. The presentation would have marked the first demonstration of the title, which is being co-developed by Nintendo and Niantic for mobile devices, since the augmented reality title was announced last September. According to the GDC site, the presentation, by Niantic’s CEO John Hanke, would have how his company has “developed a unique vision for delivering a mobile Pokemon experience that gets would-be trainers into the outdoors… Attendees will get a first-hand, in-depth look at how players are interacting and exploring the world with one another through Pokemon GO, the collaborative approach to design and development for the game and the next evolution of augmented reality and real-world mobile gameplay experiences”.
No details have been released as to why the presentation has been cancelled as of yet. Pokemon GO will mark Nintendo’s first major attempt at bringing the Pokemon experience to smartphones, and, through the magic of augmented reality, will allow players to capture, train, battle and evolve creatures that they discover in real world locations. The title will also have a wrist-mounted, Bluetooth-compatible wearable device that will enable in-game functions, like catching monsters, to be performed on the go. The device will also alert wearers when catchable Pokemon are nearby in their real-world location.
As of yet Niantic and Nintendo have been cagey about how the game will function beyond the initial promise; the March 14th presentation was set to be the first look at the title in operation. Pokemon GO is expected to launch later this year as a free download through both the App Store and Google Play. In-app purchases will be a part of the title’s monetization.
