PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has been a big hit ever since it launched into Steam Early Access earlier this year, and now we know it hasn’t lost any momentum. It has now been revealed that the game has sold a whopping 4 million copies within 3 months of its launch, putting it in a league of its own.
The game launched into Steam early access on March 23rd, which was certainly a big month for gaming as it also had the likes of Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Mass Effect: Andromeda and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Despite all of the competition on hand,an unfinished game wiped the floor with its competitors quite handily, and looks to continue to do that for the foreseeable future.
For those who are unfamiliar with the game, it’s a third-person battle royale shooter that is very unique. “Starting with nothing, players must fight to locate weapons and supplies in a battle to be the lone survivor. This realistic, high tension game is set on a massive 8×8 km island with a level of detail that showcases Unreal Engine 4’s capabilities.”
While there have been other battle royale-like games that have released in the past, Battlegrounds stands out for doing it within the modern shooter genre that is of course still an immensely popular genre today. It also helps that the developer has been updating the game regularly and listening to fan feedback, which has gone a long way towards keeping many people invested in the game for months on end.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is currently available through Steam Early Access for $29.99, though it is expected to get a full release on PC and Xbox One later this year. A PlayStation 4 version of the game is possible, but there are no details on when that version might release.
