Lara Croft will be facing off against a terrifying Slavic folklore legend in Rise of the Tomb Raider’s newest story focused DLC, Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch.
According to a news post made by Polygon, this horror themed expansion for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 has been confirmed by Microsoft to have a release date scheduled for January 26th. The expansion promises “hours” of thrilling gameplay as you traverse through the dangerous dungeon of Baba Yaga, encountering new types of enemies and solving new puzzles in order to progress.
In the trailer released for the expansion’s announcement, Lara is first seen approaching a scarecrow-esque effigy with an animal skull for a head, cloaked in chains, and gnarled branches for arms. It towers menacingly before a bonfire, and it appears to be placed as a warning just at the entrance of the cave. As she travels deep into the cave, Lara begins to wheeze and cough, saying that there’s “some sort of pollen”, which sends her into a hallucination, and she staggers into an eerie green mist. The ghostly sound of Lara’s deceased father chuckling echoes through a snowy forest, and his apparition makes Lara fall right into a trap. The most haunting scene within the trailer is of the walking house Baba Yaga is known to live and travel in making its appearance as it stomps around in front of the tomb raider, shaking the earth beneath them.
Included with the Baba Yaga DLC will be a new outfit and a new bow. The Temple of the Witch will be available to play immediately for players who purchased the Season Pass for Rise of the Tomb Raider, however it is not known if it will be available for the PC version, which is scheduled to release on January 28th. An individual release of the DLC outside of the Season Pass has not been discussed as of yet.
