The flagship devices of this year are definitely amazing and they bring a lot of new features to the table. While these are the handsets the majority of people dream of, many of us have to settle for mid-range handsets. Thankfully, this niche also has a lot to offer. Mid-range smartphones get more and more powerful every year, giving us the possibility to opt for affordable devices with some really impressive specs and features. Two of the latest handsets to launch was the Motorola Moto X4 and the Oppo F5. Both of them have something over the other. But which one of them is the overall better handset?
Motorola Moto X4
Lenovo brought back the X series in the form of the Motorola Moto X4. The handset looks a lot like the other Moto smartphones to launch this year, with the same rounded design and rather thick bezels. It also kept the physical home button on the bottom, which we now rarely see in new smartphones. The Motorola Moto X4 is dust and waterproof, which is extremely important, making the handset quite an impressive one. Unfortunately, not many mid-range handsets are IP68 certified. There are even flagship handsets that don’t offer this feature. The design might be considered dated by today’s standard but the Motorola Moto X4 has a solid build and there probably are smartphone users out there who still cherish this more than a modern but fragile design.
The 5.2-inch display of the smartphone has a 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. Only a few months ago, this was the standard aspect ratio, however, new models now adopt the 18:9 aspect ratio instead. The fingerprint sensor of the Motorola Moto X4 is embedded in the home button. On the back, there is the signature circular segment that houses the dual camera setup of the device, and of course, there is also a Motorola logo. The smartphone comes in two colors: Super Black and Sterling Blue, both of them look quite nice.
Under the hood, the Motorola Moto X4 carries the mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset. The processor is paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage. While the handset runs Android Nougat out of the box, it will get the Android Oreo upgrade too. There is also an Android One version of the handset, offering the purest version of the software. The 3,000mAh battery is more than enough to take users through the day on a single charge. The Motorola Moto X4 supports fast battery charging, which is also a nice feature to have when you are in a hurry but your battery is almost dead. The smartphone features a USB Type-C connector for charging and data transfer.
The Motorola Moto X4, as we already mentioned, features a 12MP+8MP dual rear camera, which is able to record 2160p videos at 30 fps. On the front, there is a 16MP selfie snapper which will definitely impress users who love taking their own picture. Of course, the same camera will also prove to be useful for video calls. Depending on where you buy your Motorola Moto X4 from, you will pay somewhere between $330 and $400 for it. Of course, there are other models that are cheaper, but the Moto X4 might actually be worth every cent of its price. It is a reliable handset that has a lot to offer and it will probably ensure a great user experience, especially the Android One version.
Oppo F5
The Oppo F5 is another mid-range smartphone that has a lot of fans. The handset, first of all, stands out with its modern look, as it embraces the full-screen design we’ve seen in the majority of devices lately. The handset has quite slim bezels on the top and the bottom and almost inexistent ones on the sides. It has a 78.1% screen-to-body ratio, which is quite impressive for a mid-range device. Of course, in a few more months this won’t be that impressive anymore. Even so, thanks to the new design, Oppo managed to squeeze a 6-inch display in a body that is only slightly bigger than the one of the Motorola Moto X4, which comes with a 5.2-inch display.
The 6-inch screen of the Oppo F5 has a 1080 x 2160 pixels resolution, which means that this display has a lower pixel density than the one of the Motorola Moto X4. Then again, the difference is barely visible, so probably this feature won’t be the one to convince someone to buy one device over the other. Due to the new design, the Oppo F5’s fingerprint sensor is on the back of the handset, just above the company’s logo. While this smartphone looks more modern at first glance, its body is made of plastic, which won’t feel as premium as the Motorola Moto X4’s metal and glass combination. Also, the Oppo F5 doesn’t seem to be dust and waterproof. The smartphone is available in Champagne Gold, Black, and there is even a Red version, but it is only available in the 64GB + 6GB variant.
Just like the Motorola Moto X4, the Oppo F5 has an octa-core processor. In this case, it is the MediaTek MT6763T Helio P23. The base model includes 32GB of internal storage and 4GB of RAM. There is also a more powerful variant of the handset, which includes 6GB of memory and 64GB internal storage. Both the Oppo F5 and the Motorola Moto X4 have microSD card slots, so users can further expand the storage of the smartphones. As for the battery, the Oppo F5 comes with a slightly bigger energy pack. It offers a 3,200mAh battery. Then again, it also has a larger screen, so the battery life of this handset might be shorter than the one of the Motorola Moto X4, despite the larger energy pack. Also, the Oppo F5 doesn’t offer fast-charging support, and it only features a micro USB port for charging. The smartphone runs Android Nougat out of the box. Unfortunately, there is no sign of it getting the Oreo upgrade anytime soon.
Surprisingly, the Oppo F5 features a single camera on the back. The 16MP sensor is capable of shooting 1080p@30fps videos, which is not as impressive as the video quality ensured by the Motorola Moto X4’s dual rear camera setup. However, if you are a selfie fan, you will definitely appreciate the Oppo F5’s 20MP front-facing camera. The price of the 4GB +32GB variant is around $305, while the more powerful variant will sell for around $380. Those who buy the handset from select vendors can get their hands on an Oppo F5 for an even lower price.
Which one to opt for?
While they are both mid-range handsets, the oppo F5 and the Motorola Moto X4 are quite different kinds of smartphones. Thus, they are quite hard to compare. if you want a handset with a rather dated design, but made of higher quality materials, the Motorola Moto X4 is the one for you. The Android One version is definitely appealing to many people who just love to use stock Android. The Moto X4 is a powerful mid-range handset, so it is, without a doubt worth taking into consideration when purchasing a new smartphone. The Oppo 5, on the other hand, has a more modern look and an amazing selfie camera. Also, the 6GB variant is more powerful than the Motorola Moto X4, at least on paper.
The price difference is not exactly notable when it comes to these smartphones. Of course, if you are on a strict budget, the Oppo F5 might seem to be the better choice for you. Both handsets are nice, however, if you don’t care too much about the design and the selfie camera, you should probably go for the Motorola Moto X4 as it will most likely ensure a better user experience than the Oppo F5.
