The HTC U11 Plus and U11 Life are finally official. While the latter is probably one of the best mid-range handsets we’ve seen this year, especially the Android One variant, the former is the one that could help HTC improve its sales. In the last period, the company seems to be struggling with smartphone sales, so a comeback would be nice for it. The HTC U11 Plus is indeed a great smartphone that could save the day. It is probably the best smartphone HTC has ever delivered, and it really competes nicely with other flagships too.
The HTC U11 was already an appealing handset, and the HTC U11 Plus is an improved version of it. The Plus features even slimmer bezels, and it adopts the 18:9 aspect ratio we’ve seen in the majority of flagships handsets this year. The tall display doesn’t even strike us as being odd anymore. Of course, due to the new design, the fingerprint sensor is now on the back of the handset. The 6-inch display of the Plus is a lot larger than the original U11’s, however, the dimensions of the handset remain reasonable. The screen offers a 1440 x 2880 pixels resolution, ensuring a great visual experience. The smartphone will become available in three color options: Translucent Black, Ceramic Black, and Amazing Silver, all of them look quite appealing.
While the differences on the outside are quite major, on the inside not much changed. The HTC U11 Plus sports the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset as the base model, and it includes the same amount of storage and memory. Customers will be able to choose between a variant including 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage, and a version that includes 6GB of memory and 128GB storage. Both variants offer support for additional storage also. One thing that changed is the software version. The HTC U11 Plus runs Android Oreo out of the box. The base model is also going to get the upgrade, but it is cooler to have a handset that runs the latest version of Android out of the box.
One thing that seems to have changed to the detriment of the new model is the camera setup. The HTC U11 that launched back in May sported a 16MP selfie camera, the Plus only features an 8MP sensor on the front. The primary camera has the same 12MP sensor as the original model sported. The HTC U11 Plus may feature less impressive cameras, but it makes up for it with the Bluetooth 5.0, and the larger battery. The Plus rocks a 3.930mAh battery, which is quite amazing compared to the HTC U11’s 3.000mAh energy pack. Unfortunately, the handset doesn’t support wireless charging, which is a little disappointing.
The HTC U11 Plus may not be as amazing as the iPhone X, or the Galaxy Note 8, but it is, without a doubt, the best smartphone HTC could deliver. The smartphone will reportedly cost around €800, which is definitely not a small price to pay for a smartphone, but for this price, it offers high-end specs and features. Unfortunately, the handset won’t be coming to the United States, at least for now. HTC is going to sell the new model in other markets, mainly in Europe and Asia. In the UK, the smartphone will become available starting November 20.
