Now that bezel-less smartphones are here, it’s time to think of something even more amazing. Foldable smartphones seem to be the next in line to blow our minds away. We already know that Samsung has been working for years now on such a device. The Samsung Galaxy X is rumored to be close to completion and we could see it sooner than we think. Of course, it’s hard to imagine that the South Korean tech giant will be the only one to deliver such a device. In fact, Apple is reportedly already working on its own foldable iPhone. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that this handset will be in direct competition with the Samsung Galaxy X.
According to the latest reports, Apple chose to work with LG on this project. For the iPhone X, Samsung was the supplier of the OLED panels. In the case of the foldable iPhone, it seems that LG will take the place of the South Korean giant. Some say that this is due to Apple’s fear that Samsung will steal their technology. Given the fact that the South Korean company has already been working for years on this project, this reasoning seems to be a little faulty, to say the least.
The foldable iPhone will most likely become reality only in 2020. Samsung’s Galaxy X will reportedly launch in 2018. Even with a two-year delay, Apple could actually deliver something even more impressive. of course, it won’t be the world’s first foldable handset, but the foldable iPhone could bring along something new. It wouldn’t be the first time we saw Apple take something someone else invented and perfect it to an extent where we actually think that it is an innovation. The facial recognition software on the iPhone X is not a feature we’ve never heard of before, however, it could be the best one available on the market. This could also happen with the foldable iPhone. Apple could simply perfect what others invented before.
In 2020, Apple might not even be the second company to launch a foldable smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy will most likely launch by then, and ZTE is also working on such a handset. Lenovo’s Motorola also teased a concept phone design that would don a foldable screen. There still are years to go before we will see the foldable iPhone out in the wild. Until then, we can only guess what it will be like.
