The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus launch came and went. Probably as soon as we got to see the new devices, we started thinking about what Apple will launch this year. After all, Samsung and Apple are the big competitors in the high-end smartphone market, aren’t they? We don’t deny that there are other great flagships also, but the competition between these two companies just seems to be tougher than the one between others. Well, it seems that Apple will not settle for launching two new devices, it will bring one extra. Of course, they will do this in order to celebrate the iPhone’s tenth anniversary, not as a response to the Samsung Galaxy S8.
Naturally, we will get the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus, or the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Rumors have it both ways, so we’ll have to wait and see which moniker Apple will go with. These will probably be improved versions of the current iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. They will highly likely come with faster processor, possibly more memory and even one or two new features. But the really interesting device will be the third one to arrive this year. The one that marks the special anniversary.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Min Jeong Lee, this will be a totally new device. Even though Apple doesn’t really seem to like messing with the design, this third handset is supposed to be a total overhaul. This means an entirely new design, the beginning of a new era for Apple as well. For this model, the Cupertino company is testing a new type of screen alongside new materials. It could be the first iPhone with an OLED display. Rumor has it that even though the display itself will be flat, the handset will be covered with rounded glass for protection. It is an interesting idea for a curved handset, we must admit it.
Also, it seems that Apple is working on a screen that covers most part of the front side of the handset. This sounds like Samsung’s Infinity Display, but we don’t have anything against it. A bezel-less display is always nice to look at. Of course, if it will look a lot like the Galaxy S8, a lot of naughty comments will surface. The bezel-less display results in a smartphone with a larger screen, but not a really large body. The iPhone 7 Plus is already quite large, so making the new devices even larger would definitely not be a viable option. Choosing an infinity display instead is the way to go.
In order to keep the reasonable size of the smartphone and the large screen, Apple will also probably integrate the fingerprint sensor under the touchscreen. Just like Samsung did. The materials of choice seem to be glass and stainless steel. This is definitely a good-looking combination that can turn into a premium smartphone. Besides a new design, the third iPhone model of this year could also get a brand new camera setup. According to some people, the company is testing a camera setup version where the dual cameras are one above the other. So, Apple goes vertical instead of horizontal. Even though we don’t know how it would affect the image quality, it would definitely result in a different look. A dual front-facing camera setup is also in the cards.
Naturally, all three upcoming iPhone will run on iOS 11. They will also have the company’s latest processors. Apple, just like Samsung, is going to use new processors based on a 10-nanometer production process. We’ve seen that the space they win due to these allows OEMs to go with a larger screen and slimmer bezels. Also, the smaller processor allows Apple to maintain the battery size or even pump it up a little. We all know there is no thing a battery life that is too long. The bigger the battery the better. The fact that the third model comes with such changes also means that it may not be ready until the fall. This means it might not launch at the same event as the other two models. However, if it will be as cool as it sounds like, it might be worth the extra wait.
