Samsung’s high-end smartphones have come under fire in recent times, with the disastrous release of the Note 7 and its malfunctioning battery causing it to explode not helping the company’s trust with consumers. This coupled with new competition has caused a serious dip in their high-end smartphone sales, with the sales numbers being at just 29% for the first quarter of 2017.
This is in stark contrast to what the company was experiencing during the time of the Galaxy S4, which resulted in sales skyrocketing for the company that lead to the manufacturer reaching 75% in overall high-end smartphone sales. This now means that the company will have to come up big with the reveals of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, which are both set to be announced this week on March 29th.
Of course, a large part of the Galaxy S8’s success will ride on getting the trust of their customers back and offering notable improvements that gives its competitors a run for their money. While it remains to be seen what the company will be doing to improve the smartphone, we do know that they will be conducting much more rigorous safety checks to ensure that the device doesn’t repeat the mistakes of the previous one. The safety checks will include testing of durability, x-ray, visual inspection, TVOC test, discharge test, OCV test and accelerated use test to ensure that the phone is safe no matter what the circumstances are.
It was the terrible launch of the Note 7 that allowed its major competitor Apple to report the sales numbers that it did last year, with Samsung recalling the device as soon as reports started coming out about more and more phones exploding. Around 5 million of these devices were recalled, with the company planning to completely shutdown any of the phones that may still be in use very soon. The company has said previously that around 97% of all of the phones have been reclaimed by the company, though there are still tens of thousands that are still out in the wild.
