In a recent interview with Game File, a PlayStation executive shared that the handheld PS Portal device has exceeded the company’s expectations in terms of popularity. According to Hiromi Wakai, the VP of production management, demand has consistently surpassed expectations, leading Sony to prioritize shipping more units.
The device has been in high demand since its launch in November 2023, leading to stock shortages. Sony is working to increase supply as fast as possible. During the interview, Wakai acknowledged that the PS Portal was designed for individuals with particular requirements and preferences, aligning with Sony’s expectations for the initial reactions upon its announcement. Wakai suggests that the surge in demand post-launch is due to early adopters sharing positive feedback about the device with others.
Sony has not disclosed official sales figures for the PS Portal, but according to USA game sales tracking division Circana, it ranked as the fifth-best-selling accessory in terms of consumer spending last month. The reason it didn’t chart higher is simply because there aren’t enough items available on retailer websites for people to buy, which is contributing to the current stock problems. Yet, Wakai mentioned that Sony is aware of the problem and aims to fix it soon.
