Snow Day takes the place of Mutator Mashup, and changes the ball to a giant hockey puck that slides and bounces around like Andre the Giant’s loose change. As with Mutator Mashup, the expertly honed skills of Rocket League veterans will need some adjusting.
Lining up a shot on goal? It’s safer to stick to the floor and hit your boost. Go for a flashy jump shot and you’re likely to leap right over the oversize Oreo-half. It’s not all hectic though, and Snow Day’s disc sometimes behaves quite nicely. The flat-sided object tends to slide up walls and around corners rather predictably compared to Rocket League’s more traditional spheroid.
There’s also a beautiful icy sheen gracing stadium surfaces, which thankfully is purely cosmetic. Adding frictionless cars to Rocket League could have led to the kind of chaos normally reserved for the top of Donald Trump’s head.
There are also enough Christmas-themed Garage items to fill a modest stocking. In a post on PlayStation.Blog, Psyonix VP of marketing, Jeremy Dunham, advised the following gifts are available:
- Xmas Rocket Trail
- Blitzen Topper
- Christmas Tree Topper
- Sad Sapling Topper
- Santa Topper
- Candy Cane Antenna
- Holiday Gift Antenna
These can be earned by playing matches through to 4 January. It would have been nice to see some holiday themed quick-chat options (like in Hearthstone’s Feast of Winterveil celebrations), but with the amount of free stuff Psyonix have already given players, there’s no need to be greedy. This is Christmas after all.
Rocket League is the sequel to 2008’s Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. While it received a lukewarm reception, a dedicated online community of fans has since grown, sharing war stories on Reddit and similar websites.
Psyonix also recently announced that a long-awaited Xbox version of the game is finally on its way (available February 2016).
