In-game purchases are becoming more and more common in games these days, and now the European game ratings board will be warning consumers when a game features them. PEGI will be adding a label that makes it blatantly clear that a game features in-game purchases by the end of this year, the company announced.
PEGI managing director Simon Little said the following in the official announcement on pegi.info:
“Purchase offers within games has become a broad phenomenon, and it is necessary to provide the same level of consumer information on both physical and digital releases.”
“Considering that physical releases are an important part of the market, this was an important gap to fill. The new in-game purchases descriptor will be applied to all games that offer the option to purchase digital goods with real currency. It will start appearing on physical releases towards the end of this year.”
PEGI revealed that this new label will simply feature a quick reference for parents if their child is interested in a game that features in-game purchases. A roll out for this new label was not given a specific release date, though it should start hitting retail game releases by the end of 2018. We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
