The reception to Super Mario Odyssey has been absolutely stellar since its launch last week, with the game getting incredible reviews across the board. Unsurprisingly, that all translated to big sales for the game right out of the gate, and now we’re learning that the game has broken sales records for the long-running franchise.
Nintendo has revealed that Super Mario Odyssey sold more than 1.1 million units in the United States of America alone in just five days, surpassing New Super Mario Bros. Wii to become the fastest-selling game in the franchise. The game is also the fastest-selling Switch game so far, which is saying something considering how big the sales for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild were.
Nintendo of America’s President COO, Reggie Fils-Aime said “The public continues to respond positively to Mario’s latest adventure. We’re also seeing sales momentum for Nintendo Switch thanks to an ever-growing catalog of games from large publishers and indie developers.”
Super Mario Odyssey launched exclusively for the Switch on October 27, and has gone on to become one of the best-reviewed games of all time. Everyone seems to agree that it’s a true masterpiece, with the game packing tons of variety and engaging content. The big change this time is that Mario can capture enemies with his hat, allowing him to control them and then open up countless new gameplay opportunities.
