Gravity Rush 2 fans are in for some bad news, as Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia has announced that the game’s online services will be shutting down early next year. They will officially shut down on January 19 at 12:00 a.m. ET, at which point the game will only be playable in its offline mode.
The following features will no longer be accessible once the online services are terminated:
- Sending and receiving Challenges
- Viewing the rankings
- Sending and receiving Treasure Hunts
- Sending, receiving, and reviewing Photo Ghosts
- Obtaining Dusty Tokens, as well as its rewards
There is some good news for those who own the game, as Sony has implemented a new “Dusty Token Acquisition Increase Event,” which will increase the amount of Dusty Tokens you’ll receive when playing online. This will make it a lot easier for fans to obtain the various online rewards, and hopefully get them all prior to the service being terminated.
While it’s never good news to hear that a game’s online services will be coming to an end, it’s an even bigger bummer in the case of Gravity Rush 2. When the online services are shut down early next year, the game will only have been out for one year. This points to the obvious fact that the game simply wasn’t a success for Sony, and the online services aren’t worth being kept live due to the low userbase. The game received generally solid reviews when it launched last year, becoming one of first standout titles of 2017 on PS4.
This could be the end for the Gravity Rush series, which seems like it could never catch a break. The first game was originally a PlayStation Vita exclusive, but due to that handheld selling very poorly there weren’t many people able to play the game. They ended up remastering the game for PS4, but it never managed to kick up enough interest to make this a big new series for PlayStation. With two poor-performing games, the future definitely isn’t looking bright.
