We have some good news for Halo fans who have been hoping to play their original Xbox 360 versions of many of the games on Xbox One, as many have received backwards compatibility support. The announcement was made by Major Nelson on Twitter, who revealed that Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST, Halo 4 and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary are now backwards compatible on Xbox One.
While it might seem strange that it took so long for these Halo games to get backwards compatibility support, it actually isn’t when considering that Xbox One fans have been getting their fix of the older games for years now. The Xbox One received The Master Chief Collection in 2014, which delivered remastered versions of all of the games starring Master Chief himself. Still, it’s nice that those who maybe didn’t purchase that collection will be able to play their original games on the newer console.
The series has easily been the biggest and most enduring franchise for the Xbox platform, with Halo: Combat Evolved being an early favorite on the original Xbox. Since then, there have been numerous games released in the series that have all done well from both a critical and commercial standpoint, though the most recent games haven’t quite been a home run. Original developer Bungie left the series after the release of Reach in 2010, with 343 Industries taking over for the fourth and fifth installments. While both of these games were well received, the fifth installment in particular was seen as a low point for the series.
It has been a while since we’ve had any news regarding the next entry in the Halo series, but it seems like it won’t be much longer until that changes. There have been many rumors circulating that suggest that the sixth game will be launching in 2018, which makes sense considering that there is typically a 3-year gap between each installment. It’s likely that the game will get an official announcement at E3 2018, before then getting a release in the Fall of 2018. Whatever ends up being the case, we’ll be sure to fill you in with the details as soon as they become available.
