Sonic has already made a triumphant return this year with the release of Sonic Mania, which was a throwback to the 2D-platforming of the 90s that just so happens to be the best reviewed game in the series in 15 years. While fans are currently gushing over that game, that actually isn’t the only major Sonic game that will be releasing in 2017.
Sonic Forces is the other major Sonic game slated for this year, but unlike Sonic Mania it will be a 3D-platformer. While we’re still waiting on the game’s western release date, today it has been revealed that the game will be launching on November 9th in Japan. The game will be getting both physical and digital versions for PlayStation 4 and Switch in the region, whereas the Xbox One version will only be available digitally.
While it’s unfortunate that we still don’t have a western release date for the game, it’s likely that the game will be launching at some point around the Japanese release date in other regions. We heard previously that the game was set to launch this holiday season in the west, and a November release puts it right in that time frame. Also, the game will also be getting a PC version in the west.
The response to Sonic Forces is going to be very interesting to see, as 3D Sonic games have been largely panned by critics and fans alike for many years now. While Sonic Mania is an unquestionable hit, the early buzz on Sonic Forces hasn’t been as positive and it sounds like lots of polishing will need to be done to get it where it needs to be. Hopefully the team will be able to do that, as it would be great to have 2017 be the year where Sonic finally got back on the right track.
