The release of Sonic Mania is finally upon us, with the 2D platformer being a direct callback to the games from the series’ prime in the 90s. Sega has gone ahead and released the game’s opening animation, and it is unsurprisingly dripping with 90s nostalgia. You can check it out below.
Sonic Mania – Opening Animation
This animation was animated and directed by Tyson Hesse, with custom music by Hyper Potions. Sega claims that this is their “final gift” to fans before it releases on Tuesday. This was definitely a gift, especially for those who grew up playing these games in the 90s. The animation mixed with the music definitely fits right in with that time, and if the game can drum up that same feeling throughout then it should be solid.
The following is a complete breakdown of the game:
“Play as Sonic, Tails, & Knuckles as you race through all-new Zones and fully re-imagined classics, each filled with exciting surprises and powerful bosses. Harness Sonic’s new Drop Dash, Tails’ flight, and Knuckles’ climbing abilities to overcome the evil Dr. Eggman’s robots. Discover a myriad of never-before-seen hidden paths and secrets!
This all-new experience celebrates the best of Classic Sonic, pushing the envelope forward with stunning 60 FPS gameplay and pixel-perfect physics. Welcome to the next level for the world’s fastest blue hedgehog. Welcome to Sonic Mania.”
Sonic Mania will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC on August 15th. This won’t be the only Sonic game that will be launching this year, as Sonic Forces is also set to launch on the aforementioned platforms by the end of this year. That game is a more modern 3D platformer, but looks to be taking some notes from Sonic Generations and will hopefully be similar in quality to that game than Sonic Boom.
