Sony has released a new firmware update for PlayStation 4, which brings the console up to version 4.73. While Sony is currently hard at work to bring the next big firmware update to the console, this one is yet another small one that will “improve the quality of the system performance.” The update is 324.8MB.
Version 5.0 will be the next major update for the console, which Sony recently took beta sign-ups for. While we don’t know exactly what will be coming to the console with this new update, the fact that they’re doing a beta test for it certainly suggests that big things are in the works. It could be one big new thing or several, but everything at this point is pure speculation.
While it’s a bummer that we’re getting yet another minor update, at least it’s a download that’s quick and painless. The next time you boot up your console you will be prompted to download the update if you attempt to go online, and it should download without a fuss. Also, if you keep your console in Rest Mode and have an internet connection, then the update will download without you even having to initiate it.
The PlayStation 4 has had its UI changed throughout several firmware updates, and overall the updates have improved the experience greatly. It’s very easy to access everything and it all moves smoothly, so there really isn’t much to complain about at this point. Of course, there will always be nitpicks that fans will point out no matter how good it gets, so maybe Sony will address some of the more regular requests. We should find out more when the beta goes live early this month.
