There were a lot of things that Sony showed off during their E3 2017 press conference, but there were some announcements that were strangely left out of the show. One of those is an HD remaster of .hack//G.U, which will be coming to both PlayStation 4 and PC as .hack//G.U. Last Recode.
While the game is obviously being developed to bring it up to speed with modern hardware and allow a potentially new audience to experience it, it’s also being done as a way to celebrate the series’ 15th anniversary. Big visual upgrades are expected to make the game look better than ever before, though there will also be brand new elements that aim to improve and expand on the original game.
CyberConnect2 is the team developing the game, and Bandai Namco will be publishing it. It even includes the original designer Hiroshi Matsuyama, so it looks like they have the right people in place to make this something work checking out.
The .hack//G.U. series of games originally kicked off on PlayStation 2 in the mid-2000s, which includes Rebirth, Reminisce and Redemption. While the game’s did not receive the highest praise at launch, they nevertheless developed a cult following that will undoubtedly be eager to pick up this remaster.
Prior to .hack//G.U. series was the original .hack series, which also released on the PlayStation 2 in several parts. There were four games in total in that series, which all released between 2003 and 2004. They were called Infection, Mutation, Outbreak and Quarantine. These games received a similar reception to the G.U. games, as they didn’t get rave reviews but still ended up finding a dedicated audience.
.hack//G.U. Last Recode is set to launch by the end of this year on PlayStation 4 and PC in Japan, though it remains to be seen when it will come to other regions. Be sure to stay tuned for latest details on the game’s release date.
