Blizzard has been keeping pretty busy with Overwatch lately, as they regularly tweak the game and add more content to it through updates and seasonal events. However, it looks like they may be working on a new game now, as a few job listings that have surfaced recently suggest as much.
The company recently posted some new job listings on its careers website, with 3 jobs in particular being posted that seem to point at a new game. Each of these job listings are posted under “unannounced project,” but they are all based in Blizzard’s headquarters in Irvine.
A lead software engineer is being called for in the first ad to work on a “robust first-person engine,” with “experience working on first-person or other action-oriented games” being preferred. The next job listing is also for a lead software engineer, describing the project as “an unannounced project that utilizes a robust first-person engine” and asks for the aforementioned experience from the first listing. The last job is for a senior technical animation artist that also has experience with first-person games.
While what this may ultimately be is all speculation at this point, outside of a new game it is also possible that this could be a part of a major new expansion for Overwatch. That game has been a massive success for the company, and considering that the fans are always asking for a campaign maybe that is what they are trying to deliver. Right now the game is entirely multiplayer-focused, with all of the game’s deeper lore being shown through comics outside of the game.
Whatever it is that this project ends up being, it’s pretty much a given that it will be a big success. Blizzard has a habit of making just about all of their series’ a massive success, and if this does indeed end up being a new IP it really wouldn’t be surprising if it followed the same route.
