NieR: Automata has been one of the biggest surprise successes of the year so far, launching for PlayStation 4 and PC in March and receiving critical acclaim. That has translated to some solid sales for the game, and now we’ve learned that the game has just surpasses another impressive milestone.
Square Enix has revealed recently that the game has surpassed 1.5 million shipments worldwide, with the number being calculated through retail shipments and digital downloads. While it may not seem like much when compared to the blockbuster titles of today, for an extremely niche title this is pretty impressive. In fact, the publisher even noted that the game sold much better than they expected it to.
For those who are unfamiliar with the game, you control an android named 2B that is part of a resistance to reclaim Earth from strange robotic creatures. These creatures nearly wiped out humanity, and the survivors were forced to flee to the moon to avoid being completely annihilated. Not willing to just give up their homeland, humanity creates androids called YoRHa to send back to earth and battle the robots. However, the story is much more complex and strange than that synopsis lets on, and the tale is one of the must unique and surprising in gaming today.
Apart from the game’s fantastic narrative, lots of love is consistently given to the game’s combat system. The game was developed by PlatinumGames, who are perhaps the best developers out there when it comes to delivering the best combat possible. While most of the combat consists of third-person hack ‘n’ slash, the gameplay also shifts to 2D action as well as shoot ’em up action on the fly.
NieR: Automata is available for PlayStation 4 and PC. The game recently received new DLC called 3C3C1D119440927, which added some intriguing (though hard to access) content to the game.
