Scanner Sombre, an exploration game from the makers of Prison Architect, was released on April 26 after only being announced on April 24. The developers, Introversion Software, have reportedly told PCGamer that they plan to make the jump to VR soon. Exciting news for players who have already been enjoying the VR-themed game.
For those who know nothing about Scanner Sombre, I say “VR-themed” because the game is centered around a character who must use a virtual-reality headset to explore a very large mine. Starting in utter darkness, you pick up a headset and scanner and must fill in your black surroundings with colored dots in order to see where to move throughout the mine. The game has some minor twists and turns in plot, and I won’t spoil it for you, but I recommend you check it out.
Whether the switch to VR will bring in more players to the game is entirely questionable. Even the co-founder, Mike Morris, expressed his doubts having this to say, “I think about seven people downloaded [Defcon VR].” When asked by PCGamer about VR exclusivity, Morris said, “That’s the reality of VR. So, we’re not doing exclusive VR games, I think that would be just nuts at the moment.”
I can appreciate the flexibility of Introversion Software. Most people don’t own a VR headset (myself included), and I don’t think twice about ever browsing through VR games on Steam. With the trend still being perfected, I think many people prefer to wait for the next generation of headsets.
Introversion announced last year that they would no longer provide content updates for Prison Architect anymore. Six years of development was a long road for the prison simulator, and it made the quick release of Scanner Sombre even more surprising. Hopefully VR owners will see just as quick a release for the VR version as well. With Payday 2 announcing a VR mode set to release later this year, there looks to be a lot of future content for virtual-reality enthusiasts.
