Risk of Rain 2 was announced in a blog post from the Hopoo Games DevBlog today after being in the works for six months. A rogue-like platformer, the original Risk of Rain had you fighting against near-impossible odds in a 2D sci-fi environment with only one life. Risk of Rain 2 looks to be keeping the same theme, but with one very big difference: It’s in 3D.
Hopoo Games can’t seem to stress enough that the game is in “very VERY early development.” Being their first fully 3D project, Hopoo says they hope to open up new and different gameplay options for the player. “I promise we’re doing all these things because we think it’ll make the coolest game.”
The developers also released a few GIFs and screenshots that can be seen in the blog post linked above. From what little can be seen it already looks as hectic as the original. However, the team states that “None of the systems, artstyles, assets, or game design choices will necessarily translate to the final game.” The team claims that even in its current state it’s better in 3D.
For those who have never played the original, Risk of Rain was a singleplayer/co-op platformer with one very significant feature: perma-death. The player must search through randomly generated levels to find randomly placed items (over 100) and fight randomly generated enemies with the difficulty increasing as the timer increases (it’s a lot of random). If the stars align and the player finds great gear early on then they might stand a chance, but usually death is inevitable. Players could also decide to risk farming early levels to get gear (and risk the timer-based difficulty) or try to barrel through the content while it remains relatively easier.
Risk of Rain 2 looks very ambitious for a developer that hasn’t made a 3D game yet, but I’m optimistic. Having dabbled with the original, I’m looking forward to this new transition and hope to be shooting my way through Risk of Rain 2’s brutal levels soon.
