Nintendo has to be pretty happy these days, as the launch of the Nintendo Switch has been nothing short of a success for the company. They came up very short with the Wii U and its abysmal sales, and decided to cut the cord early and start fresh with a new console offering new innovations. It’s a move that has been paying off big for them in the sales department, and may just eclipse the sales of their last console by this time next year.
The company’s first financial results since the Switch launched are in, and they revealed that the console has sold 2.74 million units. These are big numbers for certain, and the company doesn’t think that the momentum will be slowing down any time soon. In fact, they are predicting that the console is going to sell another 10 million units by this time next year. This would put the console’s sales right around the 13 million mark, which is what the Wii U’s sales were for its entire lifetime.
As for what can be thanked for the consoles early success, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has played perhaps the biggest part. The game has sold 2.76 million copies on that console alone. Just in case you missed that, that’s actually more copies of the game than there are Switch consoles currently. These numbers don’t even count the game’s respectable sales on Wii U, which brings its overall sales total to a mind-blowing 3.84 million so far.
The Switch also has a strong lineup of games for the rest of the year, which could easily keep the console selling strongly. Games like ARMS, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Super Mario Odyssey are all likely to be big hits (particularly that last one), and there’s even potential for more games to get surprise announcements at this year’s E3.
