Kerbal Space Program developer SQUAD announced yesterday, March 17th, that their smash hit video game will be expanded upon with paid downloadable content.
The announcement came in the form of a post to their official forums, in which the title of the new DLC, “Making History,” was released, as well as several features included within the expansion. The most notable additions come with the Mission Builder, which will provide players tools to create and then share custom missions (known as “contracts” within the game itself), and the History Pack, which, by SQUAD’s own words, “are pre-made missions for you to play immediately. You will have the opportunity to re-live historical missions from humankind’s own space history, all with that unique Kerbal Space Program twist! The pack will include a new set of parts and a new astronaut suit for your brave heroes. Imagine walking in the boots of the astronauts who witnessed the majesty of outer space for the first time or landed on other celestial bodies as the first of their kind.”
The announcement was expected to be met with mild negativity from the game’s fanbase, which have loyally supported Kerbal Space Program from its early access origins to its official release and beyond. However, the company appears to also be making good on a promise made to their users all the way back in 2013, in which the company states that, if the game should ever follow a paid-expansion model for new content, users that bought the game before the end of April 2013 would receive all DLC for free.
The vast majority of debate and response from PC enthusiasts, foremost the Kerbal Space Program’s fans, have taken place on the game’s official forums. The reception seems to be either equal to or more positive than the anticipation, as many of the game’s fans have actually expressed interest in this new content, and agree to reasonable prices that have been postulated by players. Official pricing and availability details will be announced at a later date.
