Crowdfunding is often the last resort for many developers that just cannot put their hands on the funding necessary to create their games. Kickstarter is one of the most used platforms and many quality games have been developed thanks to it, like Brian Fargo‘s Wasteland II, Heart Machine‘ Hyper Light Drifter and Obsidian Entertainment‘ Pillars of Eternity. Today the focus is on Timothy vs The Aliens, an action platformer that looks and feels very unique.

The game is set in black and white environment that strongly reminds us of the 30’s in the States. Timothy, the main character, is a cliche-ish gangster (fedora hat, tommy gun, brash face) that happens to be the only one who can save the world from the Aliens. And here is where the game gets interesting: everything that is Earth related is in black and white, with a very strong gangster movie-like feel, while everything Alien is vividly colourful. The demarcation is neat and the contrast makes the game more dynamic and alive. In terms of gameplay, Timothy will have to run and jump and solve puzzles, in line with the traditional 3D modern platformers. The devs insist that the open world areas that constitute the game are going to be fully explorable, both horizontally and vertically, with secrets and collectable items to be found in the most secluded places. Some action elements have also been thrown in the mix: a series of fighting sequences are spaced throughout the game to improve its pace and there is a selection of guns that Timothy can use to shoot objects, enemies and bosses alike.
Timothy vs The Aliens looks good, has its own style and it’s based on a fresh and effective concept. The black and white vs colour works wonders and the dialogues and the music are well written and make for an immersive experience in the game. The project still has 23 days to go to reach the €130.000 target, and I hope that it will make it because I really think that this game has the potential to shine. The release date is set for December 2017, but we’ll know more about this game much sooner: I’ll keep monitoring their campaign and keep you posted on its development.
