The developers at Offworld Industries along with Epic Games Inc. have officially released Squad SDK, which is available to download for free over at unrealengine.com. Composed of members from the Project Reality mod team for Battlefield 2 in addition to RoyAwesome, the Lead Developer for Empires Mod Team on Half-Life 2, Offworld Industries wants to give modders the same opportunities their favorite FPS games offered them with the release of Squad SDK.
There’s absolutely zero catch here, except for the desire of people at Offworld Industries to see Squad SDK assist the next generation of FPS modders. Several founders have already noted that they wish to play an active role in both the modding community and the official branch. So far there are over 200 active modders for Squad, which is based on enrollment on forums such as joinsquad.com.
To say a little bit about the game, Squad is a massive 50 vs. 50 first person shooter that aims to capture the realism of warfare through communication and teamwork. The player is tasked with leading a squad, finding enemy FOBs, and strategically setting up their own FOBs and ammo crates. Obviously, teamwork is essential in a game like this (I mean it is called Squad after all), and running around rambo style as if this were Call of Duty simply won’t cut it.
Squad is currently in Early Access and is available during the Steam Summer Sale (ends on July 4th) for a discounted price of $29.99. Steam reviews for Squad rate Very Positive, which is extremely impressive for a title still in early access, but be warned that the game can be quite demanding to run.
