Developer The Game Bakers has announced the release date for Furi, and it’s surprisingly soon! The twin-stick arcade boss-rusher will drop July 5th for PS4 and PC.
Being a glutton for arcade-style punishment, I’ve kept my eye on Furi since its announcement last year, and my anticipation has only grown more and more with each subsequent trailer released. Furi drops players into the shoes of an unknown prisoner, held captive and tortured for an equally unknown reason, before being released by an unusual bunny-masked stranger and urged to fight for your freedom against your jailers. Furi is billed as Boss Rush: The Game, with every encounter seeing players square off against a new, unique enemy in the form of one of your wardens. Each boss is designed (very awesomely so), by Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki. Gameplay is fast, brutal and specifically designed to simulate a tense, one-on-one duel to the death.
Furi’s music has also been much lauded thus far, a pulsing electro-synth mix recorded by numerous notable artists in the genre and already slated for a neato-looking vinyl release.
Overall, Furi has certainly got a unique vibe going on, from the gameplay to the stylish, neon-soaked visuals to its unusual character-driven gameplay. In an interview with HardcoreGamer, Furi creative director Emeric Thoa stated that he wanted to create a game where no two encounters felt the same and that your character’s captors also “…have a reason to fight… They have a reason for not wanting you to escape.”
While I’m a big masochist when it comes to games, I’m equally so a fan of character and story-focused material. So to see the two wrapped up in one nice package is a pretty rare treat. You can bet I’ll be beating myself up with Furi come July 5th.
