The E3 gameplay trailer for Deck 13’s, The Surge teases the possible extinction of humanity, and one man’s fight to stop it. The universe of the upcoming title is set within a dystopian future where the mysterious corporation, CREO, is leading the effort to repair the earth’s atmosphere and put an end to global warming. The only problem being that as Jonah Gutenberg, the CEO of the corporation, grew more powerful, he began to lose control over his technology. Resulting in the catastrophic events that the player will find themselves in. With the entire world on the verge of collapse and humanity nearing it’s end, CREO decided that the company’s time was better served trying to save itself. A task which was passed on to an unsuspecting employee who also happens to be the game’s protagonist.
In The Surge, players will pilot an advanced exo-suit that was designed to aid the employees of CREO. The suit gives the player extraordinary weapons, fighting abilities and super human strength. With the added bonus of gradual upgrades throughout the core gameplay. Deck 13’s new title plays as an action RPG that allows you to customize the load out of your exo-suit using makeshift parts and weapons taken from the world around you. The Surge places a heavy emphasis on environmental story telling to provide players with the tools necessary to help your character find out what exactly happened at the company, and discover a way to fix it. In order to do this, players will have to master Deck 13’s one on one dueling mechanic to survive the plague of corrupted exo-suits. The dueling gameplay teased at E3, requires players to keep an eye on both the environment and enemy as you try to dodge incoming enemies and find the right moment to strike back.
Although the gameplay within the Surge is similar to the previous Deck 13 title, Lords of the Fallen, the new experience brings the addition of a limb targeting mechanic. As detailed in the E3 trailer, limb targeting brings out some of the game’s RPG elements with the ability to not only choose whether you will attack or defend, but also where the character will specifically strike. Refining what was a simple attack into a more precise movement that can land a critical blow on the opposing enemy. While The Surge is still in development for the PC, PS4 and Xbox One, Deck 13 has announced that the game is steadily nearing its anticipated 2017 release.
