‘Never Have I Ever’s’ Erica Oyama is writing the update of the show about best friends raising their kids together under one roof.
NBC is looking back to the 1980s for its newest piece of comedy development.
The network has given a put pilot commitment to a remake of Kate & Allie, about two best friends who raise their kids in the same household. The original series, which starred Jane Curtin and Susan Saint James, ran from 1984-89 on CBS.
Erica Oyama (Never Have I Ever, Fresh Off the Boat) is writing the script, which comes from Universal Television, Propagate and Nahnatchka Khan’s Fierce Baby. Khan has an overall TV deal at Universal.
As with the original, the updated Kate & Allie will center on the two title characters and their unconventional arrangement: They’re like sister wives, but without having to pretend to love the same man, and show that romance isn’t necessary to be a successful woman and mother.
The show joins a comedy development roster that also includes Hungry, executive produced by and starring Demi Lovato as a member of a food issues group, and three holdovers from the 2020 cycle: Crazy for You, Jefferies and Someone Out There.
The project marks the third teaming for Oyama and Khan, previously worked together on ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat and are currently on NBC’s Young Rock, which premieres in February. Oyama also created the Bachelor parody Burning Love, which earned an Emmy nomination for best short-form program in 2013.
Oyama and Khan are executive producing Kate & Allie with Ben Silverman, Rodney Ferrell, Jen Carreras, Peter Principato, Brian Dobbins, Howard T. Owens and Gregory Lipstone.
