On ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers,’ the Oscar-winning actress said that director Doug Liman influenced her decision to take the job: “I don’t think I would have said yes to anyone else.”
Anne Hathaway gets a much needed release from the stress of quarantine in HBO Max’s Locked Down.
On Thursday’s episode of Late Night With Seth Meyers, Hathaway talked with the host about her unique experience filming the heist movie in the midst of a pandemic.
Up against intense safety protocols and an 18-day shooting window, Locked Down is the first movie that documents the early days of lockdown across the globe in 2020.
“It was exhilarating,” Hathaway said of the experience. “I feel like some people started smoking again during lockdown, some people started drinking with lunch, and then we just took our feelings and made a film about it.”
The Oscar-winning actress praised screenwriter Steven Knight for a script that “[she] found cathartic.”
“All of it just felt like we probably shouldn’t do it, but I’m so glad we did,” Hathaway said.
Meyers and Hathaway went on to sing the praises of the film’s director Doug Liman, who is known for past work including The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow and Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
“I don’t think I would have said yes to anyone else,” she said of Liman. “He’s so inspiring and he takes these risks. I mean, he’s about to go to space with Tom Cruise and make a movie.”
Several scenes from the film take place in London at Harrods, the world’s most exclusive department store. With coronavirus shutdowns in place, the cast and crew were able to access an empty Harrods while filming.
“It just kind of added to the surreality of everything,” Hathaway said of being in the department store at night. “It was kind of like the museum of super fancy stuff.”
Meyers went on to ask Hathaway if she shared any of her character’s coping behaviors depicted in the film.
“So many times,” Hathaway confirmed. “In the early days of lockdown … I would need to release but I didn’t want to scare my kids, so I would just scream into a pillow a lot.”
And although Hathaway herself didn’t take part in the tie-dye trend of early quarantine, she shared that Liman ended up tie-dying several shirts for the cast and crew, one of which Hathaway ended up wearing in the final scene of the movie.
“He can tie-dye, he goes into space, he does it all,” she laughed.
