After numerous teasers on Twitter and other social media over the past couple of months, Hi-Rez Studios has just announced that the popular MOBA SMITE is finally coming to Mac computers. After its official release on PC a little over two years ago, SMITE has expanded its market quite a bit, first being ported to the Xbox One back in 2015 and then just recently the PS4 a few months ago. It’s even currently available as a download through the Steam Client. However, Mac support never seemed to be in the cards.
Earlier this year, though, Mac users got a glimmer of hope when a cryptic tweet went out from an employee’s account that hinted support for the platform was being actively worked on. It was something that was mostly expected by the community not to happen for quite a long time, as Hi-Rez made it pretty clear that moving to consoles was a large priority.
Now, Mac support for SMITE is officially available with the 3.12 Midsummer Patch that was just released yesterday, which includes the new god Erlang Shen and the beginning of the Summer of SMITE event, which includes a bunch of new skins and other premium content. You can download it exclusively via Steam, and it is playable on MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Pro and Mac mini computers that meet the minimum system qualifications for the game. Furthermore, the announcement page gives an FAQ page for anyone having trouble with the set-up.
The announcement video from Hi-Rez is up on YouTube, and it’s a great little parody of the PC vs Mac adverts that were popular back in the day. You can check it out below:
Honestly, SMITE is great fun, and it’s free, so for all of my Mac users out there: go ahead and pick up this game. You won’t regret it.
