An Israeli startup, StoreDot, showed off a new technology back in 2017, the StoreDot FlashBattery, a smartphone battery that can fully charge in only five minutes. It might sound impossible, but the company’s CEO, Doron Myersdorf, recently told BBC that the battery will go into mass production as early as the beginning of 2018. Naturally, analysts took this information with a great deal of skepticism. The technology might exist, but going into production is another thing. A battery that can fully charge in five minutes could be confronted with overheating issues, and we all know where those can lead.
According to Myersdorf, the StoreDot FlashBattery uses new materials in order to complete the electrical process that charges the battery a lot faster than traditional batteries do. One of the problems the battery had back in 2015 was its thickness. The StoreDot FlashBattery was thicker than the majority of smartphone batteries. Given the fact that the majority of smartphone manufacturers struggle to deliver thinner handsets with every generation, this could be a major problem. However, according to StoreDot CEO, this problem was solved and the FlashBattery is ready for production. If this is true, we could see smartphones coming with this technology pretty soon.
High-end smartphones all have fast charging features right now. Even so, none of them are able to fully charge in only five minutes. In the best case scenario, a smartphone can get a 50% charge in 30 minutes. The difference between that and what the StoreDot FlashBattery promises to offer is quite huge. Probably this is exactly why it’s so hard to believe that this technology will actually become reality. StoreDot also claims that their electric car battery charges in only five minutes. This means that a five-minutes charge can ensure 300 miles of range. This is also quite hard to imagine, but then again, technology constantly surprises us, so nothing is impossible.
We will definitely find out more about the StoreDot FlashBattery once it goes into mass production. It’s still unclear which smartphones will be the first ones to benefit from the new technology. High-end models would be our first guess, but the use of the new technology comes with its risks, so maybe major OEMs will sit this one out until they make sure the batteries are safe. To be honest, it would be great to have batteries that fully charge in only 5 minutes.
