Any gamer’s best friend is their gaming laptop. Even though a few years back there were not many models to choose from, now there is one for every gamer. Today we are going to take a look at two of them: the Lenovo IdeaPad Y900 and the ASUS ROG G701V. Both of them are great, but this doesn’t mean they are exactly the same. Each one is great in its own way. But is one of them simply better than the other one? Can one of them win the battle fair and square? Let’s see.
Lenovo IdeaPad Y900
First of all, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y900 impresses with its cool design. This gaming laptop has a gorgeous brushed metal case and some really good-looking rubber bolts that add some nice lines and angles to make it even more interesting. The red logo on the cover also looks great when lit up. The wrist support is also covered in rubber, making the laptop a lot more comfortable to use. If you like colorful lights, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y900 will definitely be to your liking. The speakers are covered by a honeycomb surface and the laptop features a trackpad bordered by a customizable light and an additional light-up strip under the screen. The laptop also has a brushed metal power button on the right and a built-in turbo switch for one press overclocking. This is placed on the left side of the keyboard.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Y900, unfortunately, doesn’t offer a 4K resolution display. Instead, it settles for a FullHD 17.3-inch screen. Even though this could be enough for many people, when it comes to gaming 4K resolution has become a must-have. Another somewhat disappointing feature of the Lenovo IdeaPad Y900 is its heftiness. It is a rather chunky, quite heavy laptop. Of course, if you only use it st home for gaming, it’s ok. However, in case you need to carry it around a lot, its 10 pounds weight could be a problem. Thankfully, the customizable, backlit, mechanical keyboard of the laptop is able to make up for the gadget’s shortcoming. It’s just a pleasure to use as every key is incredibly responsive. users can even choose between multiple color schemes to turn this keyboard into an even cooler one.
Even though we established that the Lenovo IdeaPad Y900 is a gorgeous looking device it doesn’t mean it is a perfect one. In terms of power, it could do a little better. It sports an Intel Core i7-6820HK processor and GeForce 980M graphics card, which aren’t bad at all, but they definitely aren’t the best ones on the market. The laptop comes with 16GB of RAM. It is enough for most games, but it’s not the best a laptop can do. The laptop’s cooling fans are extremely efficient, but a little on the loud side. However, if we have to choose between a cool laptop and a quiet one, the cool one would easily win the race. As for the sound, if users don’t want to listen to the fans, they can opt for listening to music or enjoy the sounds of the games. At medium volume, the speakers of the laptop sound really well. However, if you turn the volume up to the maximum, the sound will be distorted.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Y900 might not be the most powerful gaming laptop on the market, but it’s definitely one to consider purchasing. It looks great with its timeless design and it doesn’t necessarily disappoint in terms of power either. Of course, it could have better components, but the ones it has are more than capable of ensuring a nice user experience. The Lenovo IdeaPad Y900 is not only a great gaming laptop, it’s simply a nice laptop to own, even if you aren’t a full-time gamer.

ASUS ROG G701VI
Asus’s ROG G701VI is undoubtedly a gaming laptop. It looks like one, it works like one, and it feels like one. Its gunmetal gray lid with the two glowing orange stripes and the ROG logo between them just makes you take this laptop home. It looks fierce and premium at the same time. The huge vents on the back of the machine might strike some people as being rude and just too big, but they actually turn this laptop into a monster. They inspire power and courage. The backlit black and red keyboard are not as impressive as the one on the Lenovo IdeaPad Y900, but it still looks great and feels all right to use. The deck of the laptop is partly black, partly gray, and the contrast is quite a nice one.
When it comes to the display, the ASUS ROG G701VI and the Lenovo IdeaPad Y900 are approximately the same. The 17.3-inch screen offers a 1080p resolution which is all right, but a 4K one would be even better. The ASUS laptop’s display offers sharp images, wide viewing angles, and some truly vivid colors. Just like any other 17.3-inch laptop, the ROG G701VI is a hefty one. However, it is a tad lighter than the Lenovo IdeaPad Y900, weighing less than 9 pounds. That is one pound lighter than the Lenovo laptop. Whatever advantage the ROG G701VI wins in terms of weight, also loses when it comes to the keyboard. The keyboard of the ASUS laptop is not as responsive as the one of the Lenovo one. Even so, the ASUS’s keyboard is all right to use.
In terms of power, the ASUS ROG G701VI is somewhat similar to the Lenovo IdeaPad Y900. It has the same seventh generation Intel Core i7-6820HK as the Lenovo does, and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 GPU to pair it with. When it comes to memory, things change a little bit. The ASUS gaming laptop is available in two different variants. One of them comes with 32GB of RAM and the other offers 64GB of DDR4 system memory. As you can notice, even the lower memory version has double the RAM of the Lenovo IdeaPad Y900. Just like the Lenovo laptop, the ASUS ROG G701VI doesn’t really overheat. It is able to keep its cool under normal using conditions. However, playing some games will heat the laptop up. The speakers of the laptop are good quality. They osund really clear and crisp. Unfortunately, the volume can’t go as high as the one on the Lenovo IdeaPad Y900. On the other hand, at full volume the IdeaPad Y900 distorted the sound, so why have a really large speaker if it doesn;t deliver high-quality sounds?
The ASUS ROG G701VI is not the most extreme gaming laptop either. Fortunately, it still is a great one to own. It has more than decent specs, a nice design, and it is able to ensure a more than average user experience. Of course, it is also priced higher than average gaming laptops, so an above average performance is expected of it.
Conclusion
There is no clear winner in this battle. Those who consider that the design is more important than other features will most likely go for the Lenovo IdeaPad Y900. However, those who wouldn’t settle for meeting the minimum requirements of a gaming laptop will probably opt for the extra RAM. After all, the ASUS laptop offers at least twice as much memory as the Lenovo one does. Then again, the IdeaPad Y900 has a lot of little details that make it more appealing, such as its extremely comfortable keyboard. The bottom line is that everyone will choose what is the most important feature for them. The truth is both laptops are just great, but none of them are the best nes on the market. Their pricing is somewhat similar, so this won’t settle the match either. The best way to decide between them is to test them both. Whichever feels best for you will become the perfect gaming laptop you could have at this point.
