Bandai Namco has been running an interesting advertising campaign for Code Vein, initially only releasing a vague teaser with a title that said “Prepare to Dine.” While this was an obvious nod to the Dark Souls series (which they also published), we now know that the game is going to be quite different.
While we knew previously that the game would be an action RPG, today we have received the first details about how the game actually works. First up is the game’s buddy system, which allows you to take another character along with you in a dungeon. These characters will help you get through the dungeon’s challenges, and will share in all of the fear and dread that comes with them. The buddies that you can bring along increases as you progress through the story.
Next is the game’s world, which is set in the near future in a ruined world. The “Thorns of Judgment” pierced through the Earth, which obliterated nearly all of Earth’s inhabitants. However, a closed society called “Vein” that was the home to “Revenants” managed to survive. Revenants abandoned being human in order to survive, sacrificing most of their memories in the process. They are able to hold on to the last bits of their own humanity by sucking blood, and if they fail to acquire blood they transform into beings known as the “Lost.”
You control a group of Revenants as they aim to traverse this world in search of blood and the truth. Revenants are able to suck blood with the help of “Blood Veils,” and utilize a variety of special abilities and weapons to take down their enemies. Weapon selection includes things like swords and bayonets, halberds, and more. The game’s world also includes plenty of harrowing locales to explore, including the likes of ruined cities, underground caves and steep mountainous areas.
We’re still waiting on a release date and release platforms for Code Vein, but the most recent press release claims that the game will be coming to “major home consoles” in 2018. You can get more information on the game and screenshots by clicking right here.
