The Sony Playstation Network has had some serious interruptions over the past couple of days. The Network went offline for over ten hours’ yesterday, over the whole world.
Over the Christmas period there have been a number of reported hacks, and my account was actually hacked. Yesterday Playstation users were unable to get access to the online store on all Playstation platforms. It also meant that gamers were unable to play any games that require a connection to online services. This is the second year now that the service has been disrupted, with various threats from hacking groups, such as the Phantom Squad.
We still don’t know whether this group was responsible for the network problems. The group had threatened Xbox services, which haven’t actually had any issues over the Christmas period. Sony had had many issues with online services over the years, and this certainly hasn’t helped. The Sony Playstation Network is now back online, with nothing said on what actually happened. Playstation have said that they will extend Playstation Plus and Playstation Now subscriptions. Also if customers had rented shows or movies would also be reimbursed.
The company stated on Twitter that they will be offering extensions. Presumably they will offer a 24 hour free additional add on considering the amount of time the services were down. PSN experienced a few issues over the busy Christmas period, but nothing close to the widespread problems that happened in 2014 on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The issues haven’t been major this year, and Sony Playstation services are normally running well with frequent updates and deals. You can keep up to date with the official Playstation twitter here.
